After eight years as a Process Plant Operator at Ekati, Ethan Eyakfwo is ‘switching circuits’ to pursue a career as an electrician through Burgundy Diamond Mines’ Apprenticeship Program.
Ethan has just completed his first year of schooling as an apprentice and is on his way to becoming a fully certified electrician. He hopes to become a role model for younger generations in his home community of Gameti, Northwest Territories (NWT), and inspire others to seize opportunities, even if it requires stepping out of their comfort zone.
1. How did you first hear about Ekati Diamond Mine?
I first learned about Ekati from my dad. He worked at the mine, and when I was hired as a Process Plant Operator in 2016, I had the opportunity to work alongside him for a few years before he retired in 2019.
2. What motivated you to join Burgundy’s Apprenticeship Program?
It was my supervisor at the time who advised me to do so. I told him I wasn’t very confident about the apprenticeship because I heard it was tough. He encouraged me to apply by making me understand that unless you seize opportunities and apply yourself, you’ll never know what you can achieve.
3. Can you describe your experience as an electrician apprentice at Ekati?
When I first heard about apprenticeships at Ekati, I didn’t know where to start, but the training department here is very supportive. They want you to do your best and they will guide you towards achieving your career goals.
One thing I really enjoy is the smaller classroom sizes for the Apprenticeship Electrician Program at Aurora College in Fort Smith, NWT. It allows for more one-on-one conversations with the instructors, which helps students get an in-depth understanding of the material. The program includes three years of study at Aurora College and a fourth year at a trades school in Alberta.
4. What do you enjoy most about working at Ekati?
Working with the journeymen. They’ve really helped me learn more about the role and the tasks associated with becoming an electrician. They are great teachers, and I am very happy to be part of their crew.
5. What has been the greatest challenge in balancing work and education?
Schooling was one of the toughest challenges. I started working in mining at a young age and going back to school at 27 was difficult. I am proud to say I passed my first year of the electrician apprenticeship program, and I’m grateful for the opportunity to be able to pursue a career path in this field.
6. Can you share a milestone or accomplishment you’re proud of from your apprenticeship?
I’m proud of the skill sets I currently have, versus the first day I started. I didn’t know much about electrical work in the beginning, so a lot of tasks seemed daunting. After observing my superiors and asking questions, I now have a lot more in-depth knowledge and a better understanding of the work.
7. Would you recommend Burgundy’s Apprenticeship Program to others?
Definitely – this apprenticeship is a very eye-opening experience for me. It was something I was interested in but didn’t think I’d have a chance at. Stepping outside of my comfort zone has brought me one step closer to becoming a fully certified electrician, and gave me the confidence to challenge myself, learn new skills, and continue to seek future opportunities for development.
8. What advice would you give to someone considering a career in trades?
If you want an apprenticeship, don’t be afraid to go for it. The trades are a rewarding career path, and there’s always a need for tradespeople. Get out there, ask questions, and seize the opportunity if it comes your way!
