Robert Heron: Maintaining excellence at Ekati Diamond Mine

Robert Heron’s career at Ekati has been marked by continuous growth and versatility. Starting as a labourer in the warehouse, he quickly advanced by completing an electrical apprenticeship through the company. His dedication and expertise led him to compete nationally in a skills competition for electrical professionals, where he won bronze. Leveraging his hands-on experience and technical knowledge, Robert transitioned to his current role as a Maintenance Planner for the Electrical and Instrumentation team. In this capacity, he collaborates with various departments, ensuring seamless operations across the mine site.

Tell me about yourself. Where did you grow up and how did you hear about Ekati?

Growing up in the Northwest Territories, Ekati mine has been a familiar presence in my life since childhood. I’ve lived throughout the North, completing most of my education in Fort McPherson. I then finished my schooling in Yellowknife, where I currently reside.

How did you get into maintenance planning?

I initially started as a labourer in the warehouse at Ekati. After a year in that role, I took advantage of a career advancement opportunity through the electrical apprenticeship program offered by the company.

Following a few years working in the electrical trade, I received training in maintenance planning to occasionally cover for the maintenance planners at site, which eventually turned into a full-time opportunity.

What does a day in the life of a maintenance planner look like?

My day typically starts with a pre-shift safety meeting, where we review safety protocols and the days’ agenda. Effective communication is crucial in my role. I coordinate with various departments to ensure parts and equipment are organized and available for our operations when they need them. I also manage work orders for contractors, ensuring their schedules are aligned, tasks are clear, and that all contracts and safety standards are being met.

What skills do you think are essential for a career in maintenance planning?

Essential skills for a maintenance planner include the ability to set and adhere to timelines, exceptional multi-tasking abilities, and strong self-management skills. A maintenance planner is responsible for scheduling the maintenance of heavy machinery on-site and ensuring the safety of others working at the mine, so the ability to manage your time effectively is key.

Which of your accomplishments throughout your career are you most proud of?

During my apprenticeship, I achieved the highest grade of anyone who had taken the program in the Northwest Territories. Following my studies, I competed and excelled in a Territories-wide electrical skills competition, which included written knowledge exams and hands-on practical tasks. I then advanced to the national level in Winnipeg, Manitoba, where I won bronze.

What advice do you have for anyone interested in pursuing a career in maintenance planning?

To set yourself up for success in maintenance planning, consider pursuing relevant certifications such as the Project Management Professional Certification (PMP), or the Certified Management and Reliability Professional Certification (CMRP). These certifications can provide you with essential knowledge and skills associated with maintenance planning.
