Sorting and Selling
Burgundy produces rough diamonds at Ekati Diamond Mine. After the rough diamonds are sorted and valued, we sell them either through auctions or allocations to manufacturers for cutting and polishing through our sales office in Antwerp, Belgium.
We maximize the value of the run-of-mine rough diamonds we produce at Ekati Mine through sorting techniques that accurately assess each stone’s quality and colour – and therefore its value – among thousands of seemingly near-identical stones. Accurate assessment of a stone’s characteristics is the first step in maximizing its value.
Sorting for Value
Each diamond is unique – an individual mineral specimen. Once cleaned and sorted by carat weight, each stone is individually inspected and assessed by our diamond sorting specialists, using traditional handheld and head mounted loupes, together with modern technology where appropriate. Individual stones are assessed on the basis of their shape, clarity and color, using standardised methodologies and reference to benchmark samples for consistency over time.
Burgundy Diamonds currently sorts rough diamonds into approximately 12,000 different categories or price points. At this stage, the diamonds are combined into custom parcels based on each customer’s needs.
Gem-quality clear stones
The traditional “clear” or “colourless” stones found in most engagement rings and wedding rings are know as white diamonds. Colourless diamonds are rare, as most stones have tints of yellow or brown, thus a colourless diamond rates higher on the colour grading scale than a diamond that is light yellow. Ekati is a top 10 diamond mine globally based on 2021 production volume. In 2022, Ekati recovered approximately 4.1 million carats. This provides a large quantity of clear, gem-quality stones and other sought after coloured diamonds.

Fancy Coloured Diamonds
Fancy coloured diamonds have extreme rarity, making up less than 0.1 percent of global diamond production. The diamond rarity translates to real value with prices increasing fivefold over the last 20 years. From a hand-picked selection of fancy colour diamonds recovered through Burgundy’s mining operations at the Ekati Diamond Mine, we are able to transform premier rough product into polished diamonds ready to market through our brand partnerships and sales.
